i have the answer to a question that we've all asked. the question is, why is it that the letter x represents the unknown? now i know we learned that in math class, but now it's everywhere in the culture -- the x prize, the x-files, project x, tedx. where'd that come from?

about six years ago i decided that i would learn arabic, which turns out to be a supremely logical language. to write a word or a phrase or a sentence in arabic is like crafting an equation, because every part is extremely precise and carries a lot of information. that's one of the reasons so much of what we've come to think of as western science and mathematics and engineering was really worked out in the first few centuries of the common era by the persians and the arabs and the turks.

this includes the little system in arabic called al-jebra. and al-jebr roughly translates to “the system for reconciling disparate parts.“ al-jebr finally came into english as algebra. one example among many.

the arabic texts containing this mathematical wisdom finally made their way to europe -- which is to say spain -- in the 11th and 12th centuries. and when they arrived there was tremendous interest in translating this wisdom into a european language.

but there were problems. one problem is there are some sounds in arabic that just don't make it through a european voice box without lots of practice. trust me on that one. also, those very sounds tend not to be represented by the characters that are available in european languages.

here's one of the culprits. this is the letter sheen, and it makes the sound we think of as sh -- “sh.“ it's also the very first letter of the word shalan, which means “something“ just like the the english word “something“ -- some undefined, unknown thing.

If There Were No After Life

Whether there’s afterlife, the answer has never been the same. The atheists deny after life, believing that our life is no more than from the cradle to the grave. They may care about their illustrious names after death; they may feel attached to the affection of their offspring, but they never lay their hopes on their afterlife. They may also say that good will be rewarded with good, and evil with evil, but they don’t really believe any retribution in their after life.

However, in the religious world or among the superstitious people, the belief in afterlife is very popular. They do not only believe in afterlife, but thousands of reincarnations as well. In the mysterious world, there are the paradise and the hell, the celestial beings and the gods, the Buddha and the Bodhisattvas.

Maybe they really believed it, or maybe they just wanted to make use of people’s veneration, the ancient emperors always declared that they were the real dragons, the sons of God, while the royal ministers claimed to be the reincarnations of various constellations. But can the stars reincarnate?

Many people burn incense and kowtow, do good deeds and strive for virtues, not just for the present, but mainly to let God see their sincerity so as to be reborn into a better afterlife, or to achieve the highest enlightenment after several lives of practice. They do believe in afterlife. But I can’t help asking: Suppose there were no afterlife, would you still do good deeds and strive for virtues? And If God does not see what you are doing, would you still be so upright and selfless? If you work, not for serving the public and liberating the others, but just for a better afterlife of your own, isn’t it a little too selfish? Comparing with this kind of believers, those who don’t believe in afterlife, but still keep doing good deeds, are the most sincere and honest philanthropists, because they do them not for themselves but for other.

You may wonder if I believe in afterlife. My answer is: I know nothing about my previous life, so I dare not make improper comments on afterlife. But I do hope there’s afterlife! Because our present life is so short that so many things slip away before our proper understanding. I have so many dreams, so many wishes, so many ambitions, as well as so many regrets and concerns. If there were no afterlife, all of them will remain unrealized!

I’m not contented with the present commonplace life, I’m very much attached to the affections that should have been mine but have been washed away by the hurrying time, and I yearn for the perfection and maturity if I could start all over again. So believe it or not, I’d rather there were afterlife.

What's the ideal society? It's a society no one worries about their living, a society no one is refused from education, a society everyone can pursue his/her own happiness! The ideal society is filled with love, joy and kindness. In that society, we can touch the other's hearts, we can share our dreams and most important, we can just be the true men!

Let's break the ethnic divide, bridge the gap between rich and poor, hand in hand, to build a Great wall, protecting us from evil; to construct a steady bridge, connecting reality to the ideal society! Let's pursue for that, that's the only way to the bright future! They are watching us! Thank you!

Smoking is a greater cause of death and disability than any single disease, says the World Health Organisation.

According to their figures, it is responsible for approximately five million deaths worldwide every year.

Tobacco smoking is a known or probable cause of approximately 25 diseases, and even the WHO says that its impact on world health is not fully assessed.

  Heart attack and stroke.

UK studies show that smokers in their 30s and 40s are five times more likely to have a heart attack than non'smokers.

he man I admire is a white haired grandfather.

Speaking of him, I have no deep impression on him. In my eyes, he is just an old man over 60 years old. He never talks. I don't know his name yet. Every time I go to school and school, he cleans the street near my intersection, whether it's windy or rainy.

It is this ordinary grandfather who tells the etraordinary truth. I still remember that day, the grandfather was still sweeping the street. I was walking on the road after school and saw my grandfather sweeping the street. Suddenly, my grandfather coughed. I hesitated for a moment and decided to help him, but he stood up by himself. I was afraid that my grandfather would fall ill, so I asked, "grandfather, why do you sweep the streets every day? Are you a sanitation worker?" he laughed and walked away. The net day, I asked him the same question. "I'm not a sanitation worker," he said solemnly. "I sweep the streets because I want to contribute to society. The reason why I don't leave a name is that no one will remember what you did - ecept yourself! "I was silent, and I was proud to know such an old man. But for the net ten days, I didn't see my grandfather. After that, I knew he was dead.

Now, selfless dedication has become a "rare species.". We should learn from grandfather's quality - selfless dedication!

Dear teachers and students

  good morning!

My dear students, when you arrive at the school gate every morning, is the bell ringing? Nervous? The answer must be yes! The reason is that everyone will say with one voice: "traffic jam"!

The congestion phenomenon is not only felt by us, but also understood by the school! In order to effectively solve the congestion at the school gate during the rush hours of school and school, ensure the students' safe travel, cultivate students' good awareness of abiding by rules and the ability of self-care and self-improvement, maintain the safety of students and create a safe campus, the school proposes that parents pick up and send them to the designated place and queue up to enter the school.

Let's tell our parents, send their children to school, do not enter the school gate, this is conducive to the cultivation of children's happy mentality and self-care ability. Don't gather around the school gate to block the passage. It's better to pull over 10 meters away from the school gate and let the children walk into the campus. Do not park at the school gate, so as not to affect the smooth road, hinder traffic, and cause potential safety hazards.

When picking up the children, the eit of the student team should not be blocked, so as not to affect the order and safety maintenance of the student road team. Please make an appointment with your child in the school's designated pick-up area. Let the children consciously and punctually go to the designated place to find their parents. This can reduce the burden of parents looking for their children.

In order to let us grow up safely, healthily, civilly and happily, the school encourages parents to cultivate their children's ability of self-reliance and self-care. On the premise of safety guarantee, parents will pick up their children to designated places and queue up for school.

And I think it's no accident that we think this way. Neuroscientists have actually shown that human beings are hard'wired to be optimists.

So maybe that's why we think of fear, sometimes, as a danger in and of itself. “Don't worry,” we like to say to one another. “Don't panic.” In English, fear is something we conquer. It's something we fight.

It's something we overcome. But what if we looked at fear in a fresh way? What if we thought of fear as an amazing act of the imagination, something that can be as profound and insightful as storytelling itself?

It's easiest to see this link between fear and the imagination in young children, whose fears are often extraordinarily vivid.

When I was a child, I lived in California, which is, you know, mostly a very nice place to live, but for me as a child, California could also be a little scary.

I remember how frightening it was to see the chandelier that hung above our dining table swing back and forth during every minor earthquake, and I sometimes couldn't sleep at night, terrified that the Big One might strike while we were sleeping.

And what we say about kids who have fears like that is that they have a vivid imagination. But at a certain point, most of us learn to leave these kinds of visions behind and grow up.

We learn that there are no monsters hiding under the bed, and not every earthquake brings buildings down. But maybe it's no coincidence that some of our most creative minds fail to leave these kinds of fears behind as adults.

On New Year's Eve, our class had a party. The atmosphere was good. It was out of the ordinary from the very begining. The boy student from one bedroom gave an unusual performance. We saw a boy named Li Xinmin turn off all the lights in a sudden snap. Then with three resounding crow of a cock echoing in the hall, the hall was again brightly lit in a snap.

Then, the representative of the bedroom Zhu Guozhang asked us to guess a line of a poem related to the above situation. He added that Li Xinmin alone was born in the year of the dog and the other three were all born in the year of the chicken. They left us all in confusion. And it was our monitor who was quickwitted. He shouted our, “The day breaks as the cock crows three times at dawn.” The hall After that, they had another item.

This time Li Xinmin was placed in the middle of the circle. While he was standing there, the other three stood around him, each bowing down to him at an angle of 120 degrees. It was an idiom. This time I got it right:“The dog stands out among a group of chickens.”

Then we all sang and played games until it was eleven o'clock at night. The old man on night watch came to turn off the lights. We had to tear ourselves away from the party.

From this activity, I discovered that many of our classmates are really talented singers.

The stunt regiment came a new pupil, the coach started teaching from the wire, the address at the time of exercise, always did not walk a few steps down, repeated practice or so, finally sitting dejectedly up on the coach came to the disciples pat on the shoulder and said: "fall go smoothly a prerequisite." disciples heard, again climb in practice. Coach reminds: "go, go, until you forget the wire there, forgot to drop the matter, even if you really learned"

  Life sentiment

Life is full of surprises, we must practice like a tightrope, smiling, upright, if not deep down, again stand up, when we no longer care about the "accident", "drop" no longer care. We can walk faster than others and steady.
