We first came to the first tourist spot: South Street. The composition ofPingyao County is crisscrossed four streets, eight small streets, seventy-twowinding streets, and now we come to the South Street of four Avenue. You see, onboth sides of the street, old and famous shops are flourishing traditionalcommercial streets. During the Qing Dynasty, South Street controlled more thanfifty percent of the financial institutions in the country.
West Street is known as "the first street of Finance in Qing Dynasty", andit is a main street directly connected with East Street. And the East AvenueNorth and South Street intersection, North Street is to the west centralstreet.
Eight small streets and seventy-two lanes are named in the nearby buildingsor marked signs; some are named in the temple temple; some are named in a cityin the city; and some streets and lanes have been unable to explore the sourceof the name.

The entrance hall of the temple is called The Hall of Heavenly Kings and isthe shrine for Mile Buddha (Maitreya) and the Heavenly Kings (or the Divas asare called in Buddhist sutra).The statue in the middle, the man with a bigbelly, is Mile Buddha, who is commonly known as the Laughing Buddha because heis always grinning from ear to ear.
He is the future savior that will deliver all living beings to the Buddhistparadise after Sakyamuni’s Buddhist power is exhausted, and so he is also knownas the Future Buddha. The couplet on both sides is a compliment to the LaughingBuddha, meaning literally: “A big belly can hold the world’s troubles that aretroubling people. An open mouth is smiling at those who are to be smiledat.”
On either side of the hall we can see two statues. They are the fourHeavenly Kings, who are protectors of Buddhist doctrines, with each taking careof one side-the east, west, north and south. It is their joint efforts thatensure harmony, peace and prosperity of the world. The four objects they areholding-a "pipa"(a Chinese pluck instrument),an umbrella, a snake and asword-combine to mean that Buddha will ensure a favorable weather for the cropsso that people may live a happy life.
Statue at the back of the Laughing Buddha is the patron of the temple, WeiTuo or Veda by name, who is number one among the 32 generals under the fourHeavenly Kings.
